February at Washingborough Academy

As a school we have been exploring the Swedish Sapere method which translates as: to taste. The British version of this 'Flavour School' is set to launch here in the summer and we had the chance to learn more about it. Using our senses to explore our food with children, we did lots of experiments around food tasting. We were blindfolded and held our noses to heighten our other senses. In one taste test cinnamon and Demerara sugar were mixed in pot, we were told to hold our noses and put it in mouth. At first you feel the texture of the sugar, but can't taste anything...then let go of your nose and you taste everything vividly. The method teaches children to Explore sour, sweet, bitter, salty and umami. It encourages us to slow down and really think about what we put in our mouths. Image, texture and description influence our opinion of what we eat before we even try it. The Flavour School aims to help children to see trying new foods as fun and exciting therefore encouraging them to try more and increasing the variety in their diet.

It was shrove Tuesday so of course some one had to make pancakes. This year FS1 made them, the children helped measure and mix the batter then they chopped up lots of juicy strawberries. I'm pretty sure I saw more being eaten than going into the bowl! The children then chose their toppings whilst their teacher made the pancakes and they all loved getting messing eating them.

FS2 have been busy making Valentines biscuits for our annual PTA bake sale. They loved rolling out the dough and cutting out lots of heart shapes which were then uniquely decorated and sold after school to raise funds for the school.

In food education KS1 have been making vegetable soup using the last of their parsnips from their garden. The soup was very tasty and the children particularly enjoyed the addition of peas at the last minute which left them sweet and poppy in their mouths. KS1 have also been learning more about our orchard, looking at the names of the people who donated trees and helped us to plant them. The children then tried a variety of apples, describing how they look, feel and taste. They compared them all and decided on their favourite variety-Pink Lady. It was "sweet and crunchy" and "a pretty colour". As this wasn't enough, KS1 also made granola to practice their weighing skills and age with natural yoghurt and fruit.

LKS2 tried something new- coconut bread. They had been looking at bread and wanted to try an exciting recipe. The bread was very popular and all the children tried it.
In food education UKS2 have been designing a seed packet and thinking about what they would like to grow in our green house which has been cleared out and is ready to use. They also had fun making their own seed tape with onion seeds with our school gardener who is getting involved with our food education lessons and really enjoying working with the children. Our year 6 children have been making a rainbow salad (lots and lots and lots of grating!) to show our visitors how we teach independent cooking skills. In food education we have begun exploring a local recipe, Lincolnshire plum loaf, which is traditionally served with Lincoln Poacher cheese.

At the Snack Shack we decided to bring a little sunshine to the day with pineapple kebabs which were griddled with lime and honey. We tried a new recipe, sweet corn and cottage cheese pancakes, served with sweet chilli dipping sauce. We then made sweet potato muffins - a popular recipe with the children who add chilli flakes to half the mix giving an element of surprise as to which you will get!
