Schools in Leicestershire have been celebrating achieving a Food for Life Foundation Award which recognises their achievements in embedding a good food culture, despite a particularly challenging school food environment.
11 out of 20 schools awarded since its introduction are in Leicestershire, demonstrating that they have completed 75% of the Food for Life Bronze Award criteria.
This flexibility has been introduced by Food for Life to help schools navigate increasing pressures around budgets, staffing and capacity.
The Hall Primary School is a great example of how changes outside of their control have been holding them back, despite making great progress in embedding a good food culture.
Natalie Brown, Food for Life lead teacher at The Hall Primary School, explains: “We got stuck on the criteria relating to getting rid of the flight trays. This is not something that is possible in our school at this time and has prevented us from obtaining the Food for Life Bronze Award, so it's nice to find out that the other work we have been completing has been recognised.”
Schools aren’t stopping at achieving the Foundation Award either. Greystokes Primary and Wymeswold Primary have both gone on to achieve their Food for Life Bronze Award.
After a reduction in in-person activities due to Covid-19, staff at Billesdon Primary School are now more determined than ever to invite parents to try school lunches and complete the remaining Food for Life Bronze criteria.
Other Leicestershire schools, such as The Hall Primary, are using this achievement to inspire new and different pupils to lead Food for Life activities, sharing that: “it would be quite nice to [present the Foundation Award] early on in the autumn term to get the children geared up for the following year, and also to maybe inspire some to join the School Nutrition Action Group.”
