Peel Park Primary School link their curriculum topics to growing, cooking and many other creative outdoor activities so that every pupil gets the opportunity to learn outdoors.
The school’s forest school, managed by forest leaders Jennie and Janine, is a fundamental part of their learning. Pupils forage for food, have campfires and use a pizza oven. It’s surrounded by raised beds growing seasonal produce which is harvested by pupils and used in school meals.
Our outdoor learning approach is proving to be wonderful for the children’s learning and wellbeing.
Supported by Food for Life, Jennie and Janine are connecting all their food related projects together as well as the forest school and school team, developing a whole school approach and generating internal conversations about growing, cooking and healthy eating.
They are working with teachers on taking the curriculum outdoors to encourage the children to be physical and creative whilst feeling more connected to nature and enhancing their wellbeing.
“We aim to use the principle of ‘discover, not teach’. The children seem to thrive with this approach. They appreciate the empowerment it gives them which makes them engaged and feel a sense of responsibility for their garden area and appreciation for the food we cook together.”
