To celebrate Cook and Share, Sound Primary School in Shetland organised a pizza making activity. Head Cook Alison heard about Cook and Share and knew it was something they had to get involved with. The plan was to tie it in with the Year Five leadership activity, helping them to practise decision making and working together as a team.
Ahead of the session the pupils discussed how to budget whilst making healthy choices. They discussed all sorts of recipes, from healthy soups to pasta sauces, but landed on wholemeal pizzas – a healthy twist on a firm favourite! To help with the budget, they wrote letters to their local Tesco supermarket to ask for food donations.
On the day, twenty-six pupils attended the session to make pizzas. In the morning, they chopped tomatoes for the sauce, weighed all the dry ingredients and learnt about how yeast works to prove the pizza dough. In the afternoon, after the dough had risen, they returned to roll out their dough and add their toppings of choice. There was a huge variety, and the pupils enjoyed getting to choose what went on their pizza.
All the pupils loved the process of making their own pizzas. “They all really enjoyed it and wrote me thank you letters. They are hoping we can do cooking club again,” shared Alison. Watch this space!
