As part of an exciting celebration event on Thursday 25th May, the school were presented their Food for Life Gold Award by Councillor Louise Richardson, Public Health Lead from LCC. Cllr Richmond congratulated the whole school on their work towards finding out where food comes from and growing up healthy and happy.
The school also welcomed governors and local food producers as well as Food for Life and Leicestershire County Council staff to celebrate their fantastic achievement.
Year 2 pupils were treated to a visit from Donya Donger, a Leicestershire food producer from Peacock Farm. The pupils were fascinated by the interesting facts and funny bee jokes Donya was able to tell them! Sharing her knowledge about the bees she keeps and the honey she harvests and sells at Peacock Farm, the children learnt about the difference between bumble bees, honey bees, wasps and hornets. They were given advice on how to be safe around bees and how to report a sighting of an Asian hornet.
After the award presentation assembly, the pupils enthusiastically showcased what they were growing and learning about in the recently developed school growing area with special guests. The pupils' shared how they were growing some of their favourite vegetables including cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes and peas! They demonstrated how they looked after the plants and kept them watered, with particular pride in how they maintained their bottle greenhouse. There was great excitement at finding some minibeasts, and Donya was able to identify leaf-cutter bees in the bug hotels.
Finally, the school kitchen rounded off the celebration with a school lunch eaten with all pupils in the school. It was great to see pupils enjoying their healthy and sustainable school meals. They were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone!
