Cool Food Pro is a free to use online carbon calculator that makes reducing the environmental impact of your catering practices easy. The calculator tells you what environmental and financial savings you could achieve by making small changes across five areas such as serving less but better meat, reducing waste or sourcing vegetables locally.
Caterers can tailor the tool to set individual targets. Whether you aim to increase your organic produce or reduce food waste, you can predict and generate environmental savings to suit your organisation. These can then be easily exported and visualised to communicate change to your customers and clients in many different ways.

Caterers can make key changes to reduce their environmental impact:
Food production creates around 30% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Since 2021, more than a thousand caterers in the UK and France have been supported by Cool Food Pro to reduce their environmental impact.
Together, we’ve saved over 8,000 tonnes of CO2e and almost 1.5 billion litres of water through small changes to working practices. With governmental pressures and the rise of corporate responsibility, organisations from all sectors are setting targets towards net-zero carbon emissions. These targets can often feel challenging and potentially out of reach.
Looking to reduce the carbon impact of the meals you serve? Caterers signed up to Cool Food Pro have collectively saved over 8,000 tonnes of carbon.
By making small changes to their practices, they have reduced the climate impact of the food they source and serve. Sometimes it’s difficult to know which changes to make, without compromising the quality of meals and incurring additional costs. In our case study, we illustrate how small changes to a typical school menu can make a big impact on the planet.
The initial Cool Food Pro project had a total budget of €1.2m, of which €832,825 was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund via the Interreg France (Channel) England programme.
The project was led by Université de Bretagne Occidentale, who were joined by four other French and UK partners, including The Soil Association. Support was offered to caterers within a specific funded area, around the coastal regions of the UK and Northern France.
Continued funding has enabled free use of the calculator with no sign up or subscription costs.
